PROVENCE TABLECLOTHS

At Authentique we love the vibrant and colorful fabrics from Provence. As other products from South of France, they greatly represent nature, sun, optimism, and joy of life. The traditional Provencal patterns are printed on the material and their history goes back to the 16th century, to Marseille. It is related with the Armenian community, who imported this kind of new fabrics from Indian peninsula. Therefore, the name “les indienne” is used in French. The vibrant fabrics of stunning yellows, pinks, violets, reds colors had an immediate success developing the local production. Les indienne were at first hand-printed with wood stamps, then the process of textile printing was developed. Today printed by large copper scrolls the productions are inspired by handcrafted designs from two hundred years ago, many times by authentic old documents treasures. The most common motifs used still nowadays are plants, herbs, flowers, fruits, geometric patterns, stripes, small circles, shells, and symbol of Provence – cicada. The superior quality of the fabric, the exceptionally fine warp cotton, and the grace of the motives and colors bring a worldwide success to the south French textiles. Our fabrics are made of cotton and can be machine washed at 30 ° C, we recommend the use of liquid detergent.
